Abstract

This paper explores the emerging field of new media art in general
and in particular in combination with extended reality (XR) technologies. It
seeks to extend classical reality-virtuality continuum approaches such as those
of Milgram, Kishino and others by proposing a multidimensional taxonomy for
new media art that incorporates XR technologies. While previous categoriza-
tions have been primarily technology-oriented, our taxonomy suggests a more
nuanced understanding that considers audience participation, agency, medial-
ity, spatiality, corporeality and other dimensions. Using selected examples from
recent projects, we demonstrate how this taxonomy can contribute to the analysis
of digital artworks and expand the discursive framework beyond techno-logical
characteristics. The proposed set of classifiers allows for a more precise defini-
tion of digitally enhanced artworks at the intersection of technological tools and
artistic-philosophical concepts.
