The project officially begins in April 2026 and will run until March 2029. MOVIDA brings together artists, researchers, technologists, and accessibility experts to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can support artistic creation, audience engagement, and accessibility in contemporary dance.
The project investigates how AI can be integrated into dance while remaining artist-centred, inclusive, and ethically responsible. MOVIDA focuses on supporting artistic experimentation, fostering audience co-creation, and exploring new ways to enhance accessibility for people with disabilities and mental health challenges. At the same time, the project addresses key societal and sectoral challenges associated with AI in the cultural sector, including job disruption, authorship, copyright, and environmental responsibility.
MOVIDA is a multidisciplinary project, coordinated by Tallinn University. To promote synergies between art and technology, the consortium is composed of 11 partners: 5 dance centers; 4 academic institutions (universities) with expertise in AI and media art; and 2 institutions in the field of mental health and disability (accessibility partners); across 5 countries.
The dance centers are:
- Sõltumatu Tantsu Lava (STL, Estonia),
- Tanzhaus NRW (Germany),
- O Espaço do Tempo (OEDT, Portugal),
- Centrul Național al Dansului București (CNDB, Romania) and
- Antistatic (Bulgaria).
The academic institutions are:
- Tallinn University (TLU, Estonia),
- Hochschule Düsseldorf (HSD, Germany),
- Interactive Technologies Institute (ITI, Portugal) and
- Universitatea Naţională de Artă Teatrală și Cinematografică “I.L. Caragiale” din București (UNATC, Romania).
The 2 institutions in the field of mental health and disability (associated partners) are:
Within the consortium, Hochschule Düsseldorf contributes through the MIREVI research environment, bringing expertise in virtual reality, interactive media, and artistic research at the intersection of movement and technology. Building on previous European collaborations, MOVIDA continues a shared effort to investigate how emerging technologies can support creative exploration, audience co-creation, and inclusive cultural experiences across Europe.
Over the next three years, the partners will collaborate on artistic labs and residencies, public showcases, podcasts, and the development of an open knowledge and tools platform. These activities aim to strengthen collaboration between artists and technologists, support experimentation with AI in the arts, and provide sustainable resources for the wider cultural sector.
