Skype, Facetime and similar apps have become an integral part of our everyday life. However, the digital meeting does not compare to the real, physical one. Both spatial perception and non-verbal communication are limited by the current digital channels.

Being able to teleport people and objects or even entire rooms is a long-cherished dream and has been shown in many science fiction movies. Thanks to innovative technologies, it is now possible to scan rooms and people as well as to digitize and “teleport” them by sending the scans to a remote location.

Gesturing with arms, hands and fingers is a natural part of conversations. That is why we have developed a system that is able to track finger movement with a high accuracy. This allows users of mixed reality to have a virtual conversation without having to forgo complex gestures.

Our goal is to create realistic 3D images of objects or rooms. For this purpose, we use the laser scanner Faro Focus S70, which can capture anything visible in a sphere with a radius of up to 70 meters. Whenever we scan a room, we also move along the walls and take overlapping photographs. Overall, depending on the size of the room or object, we collect between 600 and 1500 pictures to ensure that we obtain enough material in a single scanning process.

In this research project, we try to find out what kind of added value AR (augmented reality) may offer for a smart-home application. To answer this question, we have created a 3D model of an existing sitting area with a sofa and we work with smart-home sensors that enable us to control various aspects.

MireviMotionHub is a middleware for multiple body tracking systems and it unifies them in a single plug-in for the Unity game engine.

For this project, we collaborated with Simon Pierro who is known as the “iPad magician”. During his performances, he combines the possibilities of digitization with magic tricks. Together we discussed how people might be able to enjoy his magic at home in a more immersive and exciting way than merely watching a video.

Since the number of research projects we have worked on in the past and are currently working on is ever-growing, we want to develop a versatile and high-quality presentation tool based on new technologies. The Innovation Suitcase will be especially useful due to its mobility that enables us to present our projects everywhere, for instance at exhibitions. Another key feature will be the various kinds of media available to do the several projects justice.

The project aims at developing a contemporary dance performance complemented with a digital layer that dialogues with the dancers.

In this field, everything revolves around conceptional work, project management and exhibition design. All projects aim at complementing existing exhibitions by means of the diverse and innovative possibilities offered by modern technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) or project mapping. For this purpose, digital installations that enhance the present experience are developed.

In this project, we aimed at finding out whether ”hackathons‟, collaborative events for developing software in a comparatively short amount of time, can be an effective tool for creating innovative prototypes.

In 4Rooms, two people wear VR glasses and play a video game in which they need to observe and use their environment to solve various puzzles.

When people talk to each other, they do not only use the various facets of language and voice to convey information, but also their facial expressions. The latter are an essential part of our social interaction, and communication in virtual reality (VR) has been lacking this factor entirely as of yet. That is why we explore the possibilities of face tracking technology in this project.

In order to be able to move 3D characters in a virtual environment, they have to be provided with a skeleton. The vertices of the mesh (of the 3D character) are connected to the joints of the skeleton. Animations can then be applied to the skeleton, which lead to deformation of the mesh or movement of the character.
